What was the client asking from you when they first called you?
In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, after online meetings started to set in and zoom fatigue became everyone’s reality, North Results was looking for a new way to host an online event and to connect with people virtually in an exciting and engaging format.
They were looking for a physical studio space where they can broadcast to any online platform. This was a complex project that needed a combination of background video graphics with a customized virtual platform, as well as lighting, microphones, cameras, broadcasting, networking, high internet capacity, 10 individual Zoom rooms and much more. Of course, all of this had to then be streamed live to thousands of participants.
What is some background information on the client and the field they work in?
North Results is a young start up company based in Brantford, ON Canada that teaches entrepreneurs how to turn what they know, love, and do into recurring revenue through memberships. Their core values are fun, innovation, simplicity, impact, community and integrity.
How large was the audience?
Almost 1500 people tuned into the presentation. In addition, we had 10 virtual rooms with 200-300 people in each room, with an approximate audience of over 4000 attendees throughout 3 consecutive event dates.
What was the client’s intent from this show?
North Results have multiple brands within their company that focus on building a membership business and content management software. The objective was to showcase and demonstrate how their services help with selling various memberships. This was also an opportunity to help existing clients grow their revenue and entice new clients to sign up and join the program.
How did you come up with recommendations for the services they need?
Before the pandemic, Pure AV had a vast amount of experience with webcasting and broadcasting events to a global audience. So as soon as the pandemic hit, we were able to use our knowledge as a foundation during the virtual event transition.
We also knew there would be clients who would be looking for something more than just a Zoom call. With a shipment of newly purchased 2mm LED video wall panels it was a no brainer that they would be perfect for North Results’ stage background imagery. Given that LED is much brighter and offers better contrast than projection; the cleaner, polished and more realistic screen worked wonders. Best of all – it is fully curved. When North Results reached out to us with their virtual event concept we had most of the elements assembled and ready to go in our studio. We were then able to recommend refinements based on previous feedback of past virtual events.
Quick summary of how you put together the show at the venue/space given.
We scheduled a walkthrough/site visit of our studio to give the client an idea of the layout and to brainstorm ideas for how to make this an engaging event. Even though the final product was showing just one part of the studio, there was a lot of equipment behind the scenes that was going to make this show run smoothly. Our Project Manager wanted to make sure that the client was comfortable with certain gear such as our 6 confidence monitors, timers, stage lighting, teleprompters, microphones, among others.
Did you run into any complications/ how did you solve them?
With the COVID-19 pandemic we had to maintain indoor capacity limits and make sure that people were socially distanced at all times. Our staff and the client’s team wore masks at all times and constantly sanitized work areas and the stage. On the operating side, we had to gather all content for the event and create an interesting storyline. Additionally, our content development team had to prepare content and schedule meetings to ensure a smooth run of show. Another challenge was spotlighting speakers from the zoom feed that either had a question or wanted to interact with the speaker and bringing them onto the LED screen. We had to create independent internet connections, split up different feeds, all while ensuring the fastest internet speeds to be able to execute without any lagging.
Was the audience engaged/ how did they interact?
This was one of the main goals of using our studio versus just a virtual platform. We decided to include multiple interactive elements throughout the show to keep the audience interested and engaged. First and foremost, we used the LED video wall background to help Stu tell a story. Whether it was displaying cool graphics or “teleporting” a speaker onto the video wall, we tried to keep the audience intrigued. The key was always to give them an opportunity to interact in real time throughout the show. Putting up the audience on to the video wall also helped in creating a connected community atmosphere. We were able to create a live moderated chat for the audience to ask questions that we could either put up on our video wall or on our virtual platform for Q&A sessions. We were also able to conduct polls in real time keeping the audience’s engagement on the pulse of the event. Another big value added was providing the client with stream statistics and data on the event’s performance afterwards. By constantly including small different elements like these, we were able to provide an experience like no other virtual studio could offer.
